Although the scenery may not be as diverse and dramatic at the Rongai Route, there is still a plethora of sights and experiences to be had along this route. Furthermore, the reduced number of individuals on this route contributes to a more serene atmosphere. Kilimanjaro can be climbed via Rongai as a 7-day group summit or as a 6 or 7-day private summit. The 6-day variation does not include an acclimatization day on day four at Mawenzi Tarn.

Schedule

Your adventure begins with a drive through charming villages and lush coffee plantations to the picturesque wooden village of Nale Moru. On the mountain's northeast side, you will meet the porters and start your trek. The trail initially winds through a moist rainforest, gradually becoming lighter as you move to the dry north side. Soon, you will enter the heather zone, where the landscape changes dramatically. You will spend the night at First Cave Camp (Simba Camp), located at an altitude of about 9,300 feet. Simba Camp, near First Cave, offers stunning views over the plains of Kenya. This day's hike lasts about 4-5 hours.

Today's journey starts with a steady morning climb to Second Cave. The route traverses a heath landscape, characterized by heather, wildflowers, and stony paths. Enjoy stunning views of Kibo and the east-facing glaciers on the crater rim as you hike. After lunch, leave the main trail and follow a narrower path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. You will reach Second Cave, nestled in a sheltered valley near Kikelewa Caves and surrounded by giant senecio plants. This day's hike lasts about 3-4 hours, and you'll overnight at an altitude of approximately 11,300 feet.

This day is dedicated to acclimatization to enhance your chances of reaching the summit and minimize the risk of altitude sickness. Spend the morning relaxing and taking in the beautiful surroundings. Around lunchtime, depart from the camp and trek across the heath, following a narrow path toward the jagged peaks of Mawenzi and Third Cave. The hike lasts about 3-4 hours, leading to an overnight stay at an altitude of approximately 11,811 feet. Enjoy the unique scenery and use this time to adapt to the increasing elevation.

Today's trek leads you to Mawenzi Tarn Hut, starting with a short but steep climb up a grassy mountainside, offering fantastic panoramic views as a reward. As you ascend, the heathland transitions to rocky highlands, scattered with volcanic boulders from a bygone era of volcanic activity. After a few more hours on the trail, you will reach your overnight accommodation, nestled in a valley between the towering spires of Mawenzi. This day's hike lasts about 4-5 hours, culminating at an altitude of approximately 14,160 feet. Enjoy the breathtaking location and prepare for the next stage of your adventure.

You will traverse the almost lunar landscape known as "The Saddle," which connects Mawenzi and Kibo. Upon reaching Kibo Huts, situated at the foot of the Kibo crater wall, you will prepare your equipment and warm clothes for the next day's ascent to the peak. Ensure your drinking water is stored in a Thermos to prevent it from freezing solid. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and go to bed early to recharge for Kilimanjaro’s ultimate challenge. This day's hike lasts about 6-8 hours, with an overnight altitude of approximately 15,430 feet.

Around midnight, you will be awakened for a light meal before setting off into the night. The ascent begins with a challenging climb over tricky terrain littered with loose stones. Your goal is to reach Gilman's Point by dawn, allowing you to continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kibo, shortly after sunrise. After a brief stop at Gilman's Point to enjoy the view, you will proceed along the crater rim to Uhuru. The final stretch is an even incline, and depending on the season, you may encounter snow as you approach the summit. Reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters above sea level, you can celebrate your achievement, take photos at the peak sign, and enjoy the magnificent view. The descent back to Kibo Huts is surprisingly quick, where you'll enjoy a well-deserved lunch before continuing to Horombo Huts for a much-needed night's sleep. This day's hiking lasts about 4-5 hours, with an overnight altitude of approximately 12,205 feet.

On the final day, you'll descend through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Here, you'll enjoy lunch and bid farewell to your mountain crew before exiting Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. Afterward, you'll drive back to Arusha for a hot shower and a celebratory dinner. This day's hike lasts about 5-7 hours, ending at an altitude of approximately 1,843 feet.
