The Machame Route, also known as the Whisky Route, is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and recommended paths. This popular route ascends through magnificent forests and reaches the Shira Plateau via a ridge through the moorland zones. It then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the Southern Ice Fields, connecting with the Barafu Route leading to the summit. Due to its longer duration and more manageable incline, it boasts a significantly higher success rate for summiting. This schedule highlights the Machame Route’s diverse landscapes and the challenging yet rewarding experience of trekking Mount Kilimanjaro.

Schedule

Departing from Arusha after breakfast, you will proceed to Machame Gate for registration. Your journey begins through the lush rainforest, where you may encounter wildlife such as colobus monkeys. The trail offers a calm and humid atmosphere as it meanders through dense vegetation. Be prepared for a path that can be steep and boggy, requiring careful navigation. After several hours of trekking, you will reach Machame Camp, situated at an elevation of 3,010 meters. Here, you can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the camp as you retire for the night, ready for the next day's adventure.

The trek to Shira Camp begins early in the day, allowing for an arrival by mid-afternoon. As you ascend, you will witness a remarkable transformation in the landscape, transitioning from the lush rainforest to the arid moor and heathland. The trail offers breathtaking vistas as you climb higher. Upon reaching Shira Camp, you will be greeted by a stunning panorama of the mountain range. The glaciers of Kibo are illuminated by the golden hue of the setting sun. Enjoy a carefully prepared meal before retiring to your shelter for the evening. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided, ensuring you are well-nourished for the day's journey.

The primary objective of today's expedition is to facilitate acclimatization. You will ascend approximately 800 meters but will sleep at an altitude not significantly higher than the previous night's. Starting at Shira Plateau, you will make your way to Lava Tower, where you will pause for a break and enjoy lunch. The path then continues through the Barranco Valley, ultimately leading to the picturesque Barranco Camp. Throughout the six to seven-hour trek, you'll be captivated by the varied alpine desert landscape and distinctive flora, including gigantic senecios and lobelia plants. After the journey, indulge in a well-deserved dinner and extended stay at Barranco Camp. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided.

Today, you will conquer the Barranco Wall. The route involves a small amount of scrambling, and you may need to use your hands to improve your footing. However, technical climbing skills are not necessary, and your guide will provide support during the ascent. The trail features a variety of ascents and descents, aiding the acclimatization process. As you walk along the mountain ridge, you'll witness breathtaking contrasts between desert and vegetation. After a journey of 3 to 4 hours, you will arrive at Karanga Camp. Here, you can relax and perhaps engage in a game of cards during the afternoon. Enjoy an overnight stay at Karanga Camp with evening refreshment. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided.

Awaken to the sight of sunlight shimmering off the Kibo Summit and savor a satisfying brunch. Today's destination is Barafu Camp. The trail passes through arid, desert terrain, with Kibo visible for most of the day. After a three to four-hour hike, you will reach Barafu Camp. Consider having an early dinner and retiring early, as the summit endeavor, the pinnacle of your excursion, is only a few hours away. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided.

Your guide will awaken you at midnight with warm tea and pastries to prepare for your final ascent. Using only the moon and your headlamps for illumination, you will ascend to Stella Point (5,730m), reaching the crater rim in about 5 to 7 hours. After an additional 1 to 2 hours, you will arrive at Uhuru Peak, where you can witness the sunrise over the African landscape, casting a pink tint over the snowy peak and causing the glaciers to glitter. After documenting this achievement, you will descend back to Barafu Camp, where your team will be waiting with drinks and snacks. You will then proceed to Mweka Camp for your final night on the highest mountain in Africa, feeling rejuvenated and at ease. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided.

Delight in a delectable breakfast before participating in a customary farewell ceremony with your mountain crew. Begin your final descent through the rainforest, where you may encounter colobus monkeys. Be vigilant, as the trail may be muddy and damp. Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, finalize your registration and receive your summit certificates—green for those who reached Stella Point and gold for those who reached Uhuru Peak. Afterward, you will be returned to Meru View Lodge in Arusha for a leisurely shower and a day of relaxation by the pool. Breakfast and dinner are provided.
