Schedule

Registration starts at the Umbwe Park Gate, where the trek begins. You start your journey on a narrow, meandering path that ascends through the dense rainforest along the Umbwe River. The trail is precipitous and muddy, necessitating meticulous navigation as you immerse yourself in the verdant montane forest. at an altitude of 2,900 meters, you will arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp after approximately six hours of trekking. The camp is situated within the forest, providing a tranquil and protected atmosphere for relaxation. After departing Umbwe Cave Camp, we ascend from 2,940m to 3,970m over 6km, typically taking 4-5 hours. Shortly after leaving, the forest ends, revealing a new landscape. The sheer wall of the Western Breach becomes visible, occasionally hidden by the drifting afternoon mist of the Great Barranco. The terrain transitions from lush forest to a more barren environment. Following a challenging trek, we reach Barranco Camp. Here, we set up for the night, surrounded by the breathtaking scenery.

The excursion begins with a brief but enjoyable ascent to the top of the Great Barranco Wall. We then traverse over scree, covering 7 km in approximately 4 hours. As we approach the Karanga Valley, situated at 3,930m beneath the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers, the landscape transforms into an alpine desert. The barren terrain is contrasted by the dramatic ice formations, creating a spectacular view. Upon arrival at Karanga Valley, we establish our camp at the Karanga encampment. We spend the night here, recharging and preparing for the next leg of our journey.

Departing from Karanga campsite, we ascend from 3,930m to 4,600m over a six-kilometer distance, which requires approximately three hours. The trail leads us to the junction that connects with the Mweka descent trail, and from there, we ascend to Barafu Hut. At this juncture, we have completed the Southern Circuit, offering breathtaking vistas of the summit from various perspectives. At Barafu Hut, we can relax, savor dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are readily discernible from this vantage point. This strategic location allows us to rest and gather strength for the final ascent to the summit.

On summit day, you will be roused at 23:30 for tea and refreshments before commencing your ascent from 4,600m to 5,895m, followed by a descent to 3,100m. The most challenging section is the 7km ascent, starting between the Rebman and Ratzel glaciers and advancing northwest through heavy scree to Stella Point (5,732m). After a brief rest at Stella Point, you will proceed to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, and, weather permitting, witness a breathtaking sunrise. Upon reaching the summit, you will descend 23km to Mweka Hut, with a brief stop at Barafu for lunch. Trekking poles are essential during the descent due to the loose gravel. At Mweka Camp, you will conclude the day with a final dinner and a well-deserved night's sleep.

The final descent from Mweka Camp to Mweka Park Gate covers 8 kilometers and takes 3-4 hours. The trail drops from 3,100m to 1,800m, with increasing temperature and humidity as you move through the montane forest. Trekking poles and gaiters are recommended for better navigation. Light clothing is suitable, but bring rain gear and warmer layers for potential weather changes. Upon arrival at Mweka Park Gate, registration is finalized and summit certificates are distributed, with green certificates for those reaching Stella Point and gold for those reaching Uhuru Peak, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro trek with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
