The Lemosho route, which is less well-known, commences on the western side of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The initial two days of the excursion traverse the dense rainforest belt, which transitions to heath and moorland, characterized by numerous ferns and ericas. The narrow trail occasionally traverses high sections and traverses a variety of landscapes. The trail intersects with the Machame route on the third day. The Lemosho route is more difficult than the Marangu and the Rongai routes.

Schedule

In the morning, you will be picked up at the lodge and taken to the Londorossi Gate, located at an altitude of 2,250 meters. Upon arrival, you will complete the registration process with the national park authorities. After registration, you will embark on a roughly 15-kilometer drive along a bumpy track that winds through the dense rainforest, leading you to the drop-off point where your trek officially begins. From here, you will follow a moderately steep track through an amazing and unspoiled natural forest, rich in flora and fauna, until you reach Big Tree Camp, your destination for the day. Due to the presence of wildlife in this area, an armed ranger will accompany you for the first two days of your trek to ensure your safety. Your day includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner, providing you with the necessary energy for the journey ahead.

Today's long trek begins on a small trail that winds through the lush rainforest. As you climb higher, the forest gradually thins out, transitioning into a heath and moorland landscape where plants like erica and lobelia dominate. You will cross the Shira Ridge, and after 4 to 5 hours of trekking, you will reach Shira Camp 1. Here, you will stop for lunch, relax, and take in the fantastic views of Mt. Meru and the Rift Valley. After lunch, you will continue the climb for approximately 3 hours, ascending another 250 meters. The landscape changes once again as you pass giant senecios that can grow nearly 9 meters tall. You will reach Shira Camp 2, where you will set up camp for the night. With a bit of luck, you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the Kibo summit at sunset. Your day includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Today, you will climb approximately 700 meters, but you will spend the night at an elevation only slightly higher than the previous night to allow your body to acclimatize. The trek will take you to an altitude of over 4,600 meters before descending again, giving you a chance to see how your body reacts to such a height. The day begins with a long ascent above the Shira Plateau towards the Lava Tower. As you climb, the vegetation becomes sparser, and the landscape transforms into an alpine desert. The route then takes you through the wide Barranco Valley, known for its unique lobelia and giant senecio plants. After 6 to 7 hours of walking, you will arrive at Barranco Camp, considered by many to be the most beautiful camp on Kilimanjaro. Your day includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Today's trek involves numerous ascents and descents, starting with the steepest part of the entire route: the Barranco Wall. At times, you will need to use your hands for support, as there are no defined climbing paths. Safety is paramount, and your guides will assist you whenever necessary. After conquering the Barranco Wall, you will continue along the mountain ridge, where you will be rewarded with fantastic views of Kibo's southern glacier and the Kibo summit. You will reach Karanga Camp around lunchtime, allowing you to rest and enjoy the spectacular scenery. Your day includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Following breakfast, you will traverse an alpine desert area on a trail that will lead you to Barafu Camp, the destination for the day. Upon your arrival, you may choose to spend the afternoon indulging in relaxation and extending your reach in anticipation of the forthcoming summit night. The dinner will be served early to enable you to get a few hours of slumber before you are woken up at approximately midnight. This preparation is essential for the final ascent to the summit. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner comprise your daily schedule.

After some hot tea and a light snack, the climb begins at around midnight. By torchlight, you will start walking on the frozen lava ash. After 5 to 7 hours, you will reach Stella Point at 5,730 meters, the crater rim of Mt. Kilimanjaro. An additional 1 to 2 hours of climbing along the crater ridge will lead you to the summit of Uhuru Peak. From "Africa's Roof," you can watch the surrounding landscape light up with the rising sun—a truly liberating experience. After a short break and photos, you will descend back to Barafu Camp, arriving just before midday to a warm lunch and a rest. Following a 1 to 2-hour rest, you will make your way down to Mweka Camp, about 3 hours away. The day's meals include breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The final leg of your adventure begins after breakfast with a traditional farewell ceremony from the mountain crew. You will then descend gently for 2 to 3 hours through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Along the way, enjoy the serene beauty and reflect on your incredible journey. At Mweka Gate, your driver will be waiting to take you back to your lodge in Arusha. There, you can relax, take a hot shower, and savor the memories of your remarkable Kilimanjaro climb.
